You Just Got Braces! What Now?

If you’ve just received braces from Longmont Dental & Orthodontics, congratulations! You’ve just taken the first step toward achieving a healthy, beautiful smile! But we know that the first few weeks can be quite an adjustment and you’re probably wondering what to expect. Braces can be tough to get used to at first, but in just a few short days, they’ll feel completely natural.

What To Expect In The First Week

The day you get your braces put on, they will feel very strange and foreign in your mouth. Your lips probably won’t feel like they can close correctly and you may not talk normally for a little while! On the second day, you may begin to feel some soreness or discomfort, but if you feel any real pain, it will be on the third or the fourth day. Make sure to have some Tylenol or Ibuprofen on hand, just in case.

It will take the soft tissues of your mouth some time to get used to the metal of your braces. You may notice sores beginning to form on your tongue or the inside of your cheeks. We’ll be sure to provide you with orthodontic wax, which can be used to cover the metal spots that are causing the most trouble. If you run out before your next appointment, dental wax can also be found in any store that sells toothpaste or dental floss.

To avoid breaking your braces or knocking them loose, avoid using your braces as tools to open packages or bottles and avoid eating hard or sticky items, such as hard candies, ice, or taffy. If you do have a bracket come loose from your tooth, please call our office right away to make an appointment.

For any other questions or concerns about your braces, or if you’d like to schedule an appointment with our office, please contact Longmont Dental & Orthodontics, located in Longmont, CO!
