What Is Periodontics?

Periodontics is a dental specialty that focuses exclusively on periodontal disease. Periodontal disease is a damaging inflammatory disease that can destroy the gums and the other supporting structures of the teeth. Dr. Renee Shepherd is trained the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease.

Periodontal disease, also called gum disease, starts with the growth of bacteria in your mouth. However, if not treated quickly and properly, periodontal disease may cause tooth loss due to the destruction of the gums and the tissues that support your teeth.

Symptoms Of Periodontal Disease

  • Swollen, tender, or reddened gums
  • Gums that bleed during or after tooth brushing
  • Receding gums
  • Persistent bad breath or experiencing a bad taste in your mouth
  • Deep pockets that begin forming between the teeth and gums
  • Loosened or shifting teeth
  • Changes in the way teeth fit together when you bite down

It is very important to come to our office as soon as you notice any of the above symptoms. Periodontal disease becomes more painful and difficult to treat the longer you let it go without receiving dental help. We offer a wide range of treatments, such as scaling and root planing (which includes the cleaning of infected root surfaces) for less severe cases, and dental implants (which is the treatment for tooth loss due to periodontal disease) for more severe cases.

If you’re experiencing any of the above symptoms of periodontal disease, it’s important to be seen immediately. Please contact Longmont Dental & Orthodontics to set up an appointment with Dr. Shepherd. Our dentist serves Longmont, Fox Hill, Kiteley, Hilltop Village and the surrounding areas.
