Perio Medications (Arestin)

Scaling and root planing is a very effective procedure for those with periodontal (gum) disease. Scaling and root planing reduces plaque on the gums and also reduces the infection-causing bacteria. Unfortunately, for more severe cases of periodontal disease, scaling and root planing can’t possibly kill all of the bacteria. The instruments used in scaling and root planing can’t always reach the bacteria inside of the deep periodontal pockets. In situations like this, Dr. Renee Shepherd will need to administer a local antibiotic, such as Arestin.

These two therapies (scaling and root planing + Arestin), will work together in order to kill all of the bacteria that cause gum disease. This means that the infection will become much more manageable and won’t return as easily as it would with just scaling and root planing alone.

The pockets of infection inside the affected gum tissue will require treatment before your periodontal disease is able to cause any further damage to your dental or overall health. Arestin has proven to be very effective in killing the bacteria, especially when used as part of a periodontal treatment plan that includes scaling and root planing and increased oral hygiene maintenance on your part.

Arestin, a small amount of powder that will be administered to the infection pockets by Dr. Shepherd, will shrink the size of the pockets at the same time as killing the bacteria. In addition, Arestin will reduce the bleeding in the gums associated with periodontal disease and stays in the pocket of infection for a full 21 days. This will ensure continued treatment until the bacteria is completely gone.

If you have the symptoms of gum disease, it’s important to get it taken care of as early as possible in order to minimize the damage is can do to your health. Please contact Dr. Shepherd at Longmont Dental & Orthodontics to set up an appointment. We are located in beautiful Longmont, CO.
